Update 3: Kevin Keegan Quits Newcastle United Soccer Club

News coming out of England today is that the tenure of Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan could be coming to a dramatic end, just seven months after he took over the reigns.

At the crux of Keegan’s departure is the club’s handling of transfer dealings. The two players Newcastle brought in – Xisco and Gonzalez – are said to have been brought in without Keegan’s knowledge or blessing.

Also at the center of showdown talks has been the future of midfielder Joey Barton, with Keegan wanting to support him, and the board wanting to get rid of him and almost doing so at the last minute yesterday during the final hours of the transfer deadline.

Sky and the BBC are breaking with this story today. Newcastle have had a reasonably bright start to their campaign, so it looks like off the field actions are more to blame than happenings on the field. Of course, none of this has been confirmed, but knowing the circus that is Newcastle United, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Newcastle United Supporters Association had this to say:

“It’s an absolute farce, you cannot run a football club like this.”

If you were to write this stuff no one would believe you for being too far fetched! It beggers belief what is going on at Newcastle. I heard this morning that the Board wanted to sell Michael Owen without Keegan’s knowledge! How is that supposed to work? Don’t these people know what they are doing?

It’s certainly been an amazing few days in the world of the Premier League! You could never say it’s boring could you?!

Completely agree. What’s happened over the past couple of days will change the face of English football for a long time to come.

As a Geordie and Newcastle supporter I’m dismayed by the treatment Keegan has been getting. We’ve looked sharp this season and made an encouraging start – to let him go now will undo all the hard work and effort that has taken place so far.

Hi Trevor – thanks for the comments. As a soccer coach now is the busy time of the season, there’s only four weeks left and there’s still a lot of work to do – that means there is very little time for blogging.
