by admin on June 7, 2008

Today was the opening day of the 2008 European Championships. Much fancied Portugal pulled off an impressive 2-0 victory of Turkey with goals from Pepe and putting the game beyond doubt with an injury time goal scored by Raul Meireles. Cristiano Ronaldo managed to hit the post from a free-kick as the winger’s future remains uncertain.

Final Score: Portugal 2 – 0 Turkey

The Czech Republic meanwhile managed to defeat the hosts Switzerland with a well fought 1-0 win. Switzerland twice tested the Czech Republic with goalkeeper Peter Cech being called into action on numerous occasions. The Czechs held on though and Sverkos scored with a 12 yard volley to clinch the first goal and win of the tournament.

Final Score: Czech Republic 1 – 0 Switzerland

Tomorrow Austria take on Croatia and Germany take on Poland.
