In the first of todays games in Euro 2008, Spain played dark horses Russia. Many had predicted this game to be a close fought event, with underdogs Russia well coached by Guus Hiddink. However, it turned out to be the complete opposite of what many had predicted. Spain, ready to hit Russia on the counter attack at every opportunity, were well prepared. Even though the Russians had the majority of the possession, the Spaniards ran amok, in particular, David Villa who scored the first hat-trick of Euro 2008. Pavlyuchenko managed a consolation goal while Cesc Fabregas added a fourth in the 90th minute as Spain went on to defeat the Russians 4-1. Russian coach Guus Hiddink lamented that ‘defensive mistakes’ were to blame for the loss. Interestingly enough, this was the first game of the tournament that no yellow cards were shown.
Final Score: Spain 4 – 1 Russia
Meanwhile, in the second game of Euro 2008, Sweden took on holders Greece. In a game that the Greeks were quite prepared to hold on to by any means, much to the chagrin of their own fans, it took a strike of absolute quality by veteran midfielder Zlatan Ibrahimovic to which Greece had no answer. Hansson managed to grab a scrappy second goal as the Swedes held on to record a two-nil victory.
Final Score: Greece 0 – 2 Sweden
