Major League Soccer is not something I write about often, because it’s not a league that I generally follow. However, today the MLS and L.A Galaxy made the news for the wrong reasons. The departure of Alexei Lalas was certainly not too much of a surprise for MLS followers, but the resignation that followed from Gullit was a little out of left field.
Never a one to shrink away from his ’sexy football’ brand, the much maligned Dutchman was either a shrewd appointment as head coach, or a one that would spell the demise of the L.A Galaxy. Unfortunately, it was the latter. I’ve never been a big fan of Gullit as a coach, he totally destroyed Newcastle United when he was coach over there and completely alienated players and made some decisions which were slightly bizarre to say the least (one of those when he left Alan Shearer on the bench for the bitter local derby match against Sunderland).
Despite noises from the Gullit camp saying he resigned rather than being fired, you can’t help but think that he was given the option to resign or face being fired. Without a win in seven games, there was really no choice.
So where now for the L.A Galaxy? It’s certainly an opportunity for a soccer coach with something to prove – like Bruce Arena for example. However it’s a great challenge for Cobi Jones and his coaching staff to step up and prove to the rest of the MLS that even though they have big names, they don’t win you championships – whereas hard work and determination can take you exceptionally close, something the L.A Galaxy have become increasingly unfamiliar with.
