Last week we blogged about Michael Owen’s transfer to Manchester United. A lot of people were taken by surprise by this move as Owen is hardly a household name anymore and didn’t do himself any favors at Newcastle United. However, an arguably more surprising transfer, is that of A.C Milan signing Oguchi Onyewu.
“Gooch” who is 27 years old was out of contract at Belgian side Standard Liege and has signed a three year deal with the Italian soccer giants. Onyewu spent some time at then Barclays Premier League club Newcastle United on a five month loan in 2007. During his time with the Magpies he started seven games and made four substitute appearances. When Onyewu played, Newcastle kept two clean sheets and only won twice.
Will his spell at A.C Milan be any different? I think so. The Barclays Premier League is a totally different game than Serie A. The Premier League is a fast paced game while the Italian game is played at a more a controlled pace and played from the back. He’s not the quickest and was often found wanting when facing pacey, nimble strikers, but the U.S.A International defender should do well in a less hectic environment.
One thing’s for sure, Oguchi Onyewu will be learning from some of the best defensive coaches in world soccer and playing with some of the world’s best players. That can only help his career for both club and country – the U.S men’s national team will certainly be better off “Gooch’s” Italian experience.
